Centro de la Comunidad, Inc., is the only human service agency in New London County that is focused solely on the well-being of the Hispanic community.  We provide services that help to increase opportunities for Hispanic individuals and families, working towards creating a stronger community by encouraging greater participation of all Hispanics. In 35 years, Centro has helped thousands of individuals improve their education, find jobs, become better parents and contribute to the community. We currently provide services to approximately 1,000 clients per year.

Our target population is growing. The Hispanic population of New London County increased by 56% between 1990 and 2000, from 8,455 to 13,236 residents. It is diverse. Our clients come from over a dozen countries including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Perú, Ecuador, Columbia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Clients’ time in the US ranges from a couple days to several years and their age varies from 17 to 57 years. While 50% of our ESOL students have not completed high school, 16% have professional degrees. Students have continued to attend English classes even after obtaining employment—70% of the ESOL students are working.

Many employers would like to hire Hispanics to serve the growing Hispanic population of this area; however, there is a need for training that targets barriers such as English proficiency and communication skills.  We have partnered with area businesses to help them recruit qualified bilingual staff.
